Funding of insulin pumps and consumables
The PHARMAC notification also confirms funding for insulin pump therapy in New Zealand. This will be available for individuals who meet the Special Authority criteria. If you would like to be considered for funded pump therapy your healthcare team can assess whether or not you fit the criteria and make an application on your behalf. A summary of the changes are below:
- Individuals who meet the PHARMAC eligibility criteria and are approved by the Insulin Pump Panel will have access to funded pumps and consumables. For full details visit the PHARMAC website
- Individuals using the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump system prior to 1st June 2012, will be able to continue to access funded Accu-Chek Performa test strips beyond 1st March 2013. PHARMAC has indicated this access will be via Special Authority and details will be notified once an appropriate agreement has been reached.

Q. What do these proposed changes mean for individuals who use the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump system?
A. Patients using the Accu-Chek Combo insulin pump system prior to 1st June 2012, will be able to continue to access funded Accu-Chek Performa test strips beyond 1st March 2013. PHARMAC has announced this access will be via Special Authority, click here for the full notification.
Individuals can continue to purchase Accu-Chek pump consumables through the usual process.
Q. I currently use an Accu-Chek pump. Will I be eligible for funded consumables?

Please contact your healthcare professional who will determine if you meet the criteria and are eligible for funded consumables. They will need to make the application on your behalf.
Q. If I use a different brand of insulin pump consumables will my Accu-Chek pump still be covered by the warranty?
A. The Accu-Chek insulin pump warranty is valid only when used in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. This warranty will not apply if damage to your Accu-Chek insulin pump results from any type of infusion set or other pump accessory, apart from Accu-Chek consumables and accessories that are used with the pump.
Q. Will I be eligible for a new insulin pump when mine comes to the end of life/end of warranty?
A. Individuals who fit the funding criteria and are approved by the Insulin pump panel will be eligible to receive a funded insulin pump and consumables as outlined in the pharmaceutical schedule. The details of the brand currently confirmed are available from PHARMAC.
